Pursuing her dream of becoming a Nurse
Karyin is a 2013 graduate of Kennedy Krieger High School. She became associated with St. Peter's Adult Learning Center that same year. In 2015, after a volunteer opportunity at My Sister's Place, she obtained an independent volunteer placement at Mercy Medical Center, Karyin reports to Mercy Monday through Thursday where she wipes the tables in the cafeteria. On Wednesdays, she branches off from those duties to make and serve coffee and snacks to patients in the outpatient chemotherapy unit. The tasks Karyin performs at Mercy, while valuable, are beside the point. What she brings to the hospital in the form of optimism, personality, and good will is the real contribution. To quote Mark Bailey, the Volunteer Coordinator at the hospital, "Karyin is an exemplary volunteer here at Mercy Medical Center. Through her words, actions an always present smile, she personifies one of our most important values -hospitality. Patients and visitors can't help but feel gladdened and blessed when they encounter Karyin. The staff are impressed with and are very grateful for Karyin and the spirit she brings to Mercy. She is a valued and contributing member of the Mercy team."
Karyin is hoping that to one day find employment. Her dream is to become a nurse. But until that day, which is hopefully in the near future, Karyin is more than doing her part for the patients and staff at Mercy Medical Center.
